Cultural Essay

I chose to write my paper I chose to write my paper on one of the special exhibits in the library. It is called “A Golden Past: Southern Miss Football Programs, 1936-1953.” This exhibit has different images in the way of advertising, football programs, lineups, and team pictures. My favorite part of the exhibit was the different advertisements. It is so interesting to me to see just how much advertisements have changed since the 1930s. Most of the advertisements for the football team included a picture of a woman or a pack of cigarettes—two things that football players enjoy. I guess if a player thought he could smoke with a beautiful woman then he would join the team.
All of the pictures of the front covers of the football programs were a little different than the advertisements. The front covers had the names of the teams that were playing that day along with a picture of a football player or a football team. Another interesting thing about that is to see how football uniforms have transformed over the years. So the outsides of the programs appeal to people who want to watch football while the inside of the programs appeal to men who like beautiful women and cigarettes. Coca-Cola was another huge part of the football programs during the 1930s. The classic Coca-Cola bottle was seen on at least every other page in the football program. This little section of the library that told the history of USM football through pictures was very interesting to look at. It was cool to see how football has evolved over the last few decades. on one of the special exhibits in the library.
